Frequently Asked Questions & Resources

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis  is based on the science of learning and behavior. This science includes understanding about how behavior works and how learning takes place. ABA therapy applies this knowledge and science in a way that helps to increase useful or desired behaviors that have to do with learning and functioning more independently. ABA also works to help reduce behaviors that may pose a barrier to learning or be dangerous. ABA therapy is used to increase meaningful behaviors.

ABA is considered an evidence-based “best” practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association. “Evidence based” means that ABA has passed scientific tests of its usefulness, quality, and effectiveness.

What funding is in place for ABA?

There are many different insurance companies that may cover ABA. We are currently credentialed with Tricare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Georgia Medicaid to include CareSource, Wellcare, Amerigroup and PeachState.

What does a typical ABA session look like?

A typical ABA session:

• is completely positive and fun

• focuses on skill acquisition and/or behavior reduction as outlined in the treatment plan

• is individually designed to meet each child’s unique needs

• focuses on motivation to learn

• uses the most-effective, evidence-based treatment approach

Individualized Behavior plans focus on:

• working to decrease barriers to learning

• increasing important, socially significant behaviors

• increasing communication skills including verbal behavior and social skills

• increasing play behaviors

• increasing self-help and adaptive skills

The standard therapy hour consists of 45-50 minutes of direct contact with the client

and 10-15 minutes devoted to required record-keeping and other administrative

duties. It usually takes 10-15 minutes to arrange the materials and set up for sessions prior to engaging with the client. It also takes about 10-15 minutes at the end of the session to record data, take notes, tidy the setting, and discuss the session and/or answer questions with parents. Staff are also expected to review session with parents

at the end of the session. If sessions occur at home, a parent/guardian’s presence is required at all times.

What is required to access ABA services?

First, we must receive authorization from your insurance company to complete an assessment. To request authorization, you must have a referral for ABA, have completed our intake packet and have a psychological evaluation that has been completed within the last 3 years. If you are paying out of pocket, then you must complete our intake process first.

Next, your family comes in for assessment to include an interview and some direct and indirect assessments. This information is then complied into a treatment plan. Once the treatment plan is complete, it will be reviewed with you. Then, we send it to your insurance company for approval. From there, you will be required to attend parent training sessions at least once a month and your child will receive therapy according to the agreed upon schedule. The treatment plan is updated every 6 months  in which your child's progress is reviewed and it is determined that a) services should continue or b) child is ready to transition from ABA therapy and has met all treatment goals.

We use a platform called CentralReach, in which you have access to your child's program and progress in real-time.
